Very gorgeous. Your style and handling of the skin tones is VERY reminiscent to Boris Vallejo and his wife Julie Bell (my fave artists of all time) Such a talent you have! Is this oil on mason board or just canvas?
Glad you liked my comment. I'm a long time fan and love your ERB work! The "Thuvia, Maid of Mars" piece is my personal favorite. I think it is perhaps my favorite of ERB's Martian Chronicles as well! Best regards, Rich (AKA BigGuido)
Really, really good. Its like the birth of the first Barsoomians. Then i read the books i always imagined all things on Barsoom as in your pictures-how got me to read the books in the first place. I hope you will make a picture of the Barsoomian tree of life how gave birth to all life there.
wow once again a stunning original work of art. This is the first time I have seen anyone do a cover depicting the birth of one from mars. Joe you vision is spot on for what you are doing with this series, I look forward each month to what you have in store for the next issue. Thank you for doing these covers your way, and giving us a new look at ERB Warlord of Mars!
Terrific composition but...forgive my harsh criticism, I noticed that some of your drawings lately are not as sharp looking as before in terms of skin texture and lighting. Is this intentional? Does it have something to do with the paints or technique you are using now? Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying it's a bad thing nor have I the intention to discourage you. Your paintings are awesome as always and I've always looked up to you as a legendary artist but as a fan of your work who has been admiring one painting after another, I begin to notice this minor thing here.
Maybe it's because your painting style has changed over the years or maybe I'm just imagining it but I just want to let you know my honest take on this.
Not quite sure what you mean, but I've intentionally progressed toward a more painterly style, with less emphasis on sharp highlights and muscle separation for a more natural look. That may be what you're noticing.
Amazing as always Joe, if only the movie looked more like this...I still liked the movie BTW, I only wish it was more "out there" in it's depiction of Mars like in yours and Frazetta's paintings. Can't wait to add this to my cover collection for this series !
