This should be of interest to those who in the past have asked about editorial input on these covers. I normally have pretty much free rein on these covers as I know the material as well as I do. in this particular instance I deviated a bit from Dynamite's version of the Tharks and was asked to retouch it to match the images they had already established for their books. I liked the balance of my original composition and didn't want to alter the actual painting so I enlisted my good buddy Dave Johnson to work a bit of Photoshop magic for me, as I'm terrible at it. I sent him a diagram of what I needed moved around and he worked it up for me. I later removed the antenna ears as well. This way my original is intact and Dynamite got the version they requested. The image on the right is the one that will eventually see print.
Thanks, Dave! Your "Thank You" package is on the way!
Addendum; The change was not a big issue. The business of commercial art (and comics ARE commercial art) is to fulfill your client's needs. This is probably the first change they've ever requested so I'm WAY ahead of the game.
It's interesting to see how changes like that are required. Although I do think your original composition was better, Dave Johnson's did a great job of making it all balance out beautifully in the end. Needless to say, the modelling and lighting on both characters looks fantastic, especially on the Thark.
