WARLORD OF MARS No.21 by JoeJusko WARLORD OF MARS No.21 by JoeJusko
This should be of interest to those who in the past have asked about editorial input on these covers. I normally have pretty much free rein on these covers as I know the material as well as I do. in this particular instance I deviated a bit from Dynamite's version of the Tharks and was asked to retouch it to match the images they had already established for their books. I liked the balance of my original composition and didn't want to alter the actual painting so I enlisted my good buddy Dave Johnson to work a bit of Photoshop magic for me, as I'm terrible at it. I sent him a diagram of what I needed moved around and he worked it up for me. I later removed the antenna ears as well. This way my original is intact and Dynamite got the version they requested. The image on the right is the one that will eventually see print.

Thanks, Dave! Your "Thank You" package is on the way! :-)

Addendum;
The change was not a big issue. The business of commercial art (and comics ARE commercial art) is to fulfill your client's needs. This is probably the first change they've ever requested so I'm WAY ahead of the game. :-)

I think the original work is not as saturated, is it true?

Personally, from what I've read of the John Carter books, the one at the left seems more accurate with the descriptions that Edgar Rice Burroughs had made.

Both versions are awesome, just a matter of taste and attachment of the artist to his work. hehehhe

I prefer your version, but of course, the client is king and should get what he wants. Great mood anyways.

It's interesting to see how changes like that are required. Although I do think your original composition was better, Dave Johnson's did a great job of making it all balance out beautifully in the end. Needless to say, the modelling and lighting on both characters looks fantastic, especially on the Thark.

so did you have to repaint the entire thark head and drop it in the background or did your friend alter its appearance ? either way, masterfully done!

I did a mock up of what I needed and Dave simply moved where I needed it. I say "simply" because he said it was simple. I have no idea how to do it. LOL

The teeth on the original definitely look more intimidating but I kind of like the omission of the stalk like ears in the retouch. It's hard for me to decide which one I like best since both have things in them that I think make it work :XD:

Any idea why the Green Men lost their ears in the Dynamite style sheets? I noticed the same thing in the movie.

never hurts to have a legend like :icondevilpig: in your corner!

I've worked in illustration (although not comics) and I know changes are the name of the game. But to be the first shows how much on target your work is.

Awesome!

Maybe I missed the gravy boat on this, but has Dynamite put out an art book of your covers yet? I would think you've done enough to make for a pretty solid book at this point. It would really neat if it had bits like this accompanying the pieces adding insight into the art.

Fantastic, again thanks for sharing, I like the right version more (the alter) simply because the "enemy" looks more menacing. The ears would do it for me if I didn't knew about Shrek xD

Really epic stuff!

The original rocks, he looks much more fierce with the long canines [is that how you call it?] than with those Orc like teeth hehe

And um, did you adjust the levels on PS so it would look like as we see it here or the painting is actually like this Joe?

Actual painted color. going for a bit more graphic color scheme, ala the Bama DOC SAVAGE books.

I think the original design you made for the green monster is better. But the artist who changed it in photoshop did a great job too.
