I think the back lighting is what makes this piece work. That and the arid feeling that the color scheme implies.

BTW, the back lighting, as well as the bounce and reflected lighting effects achieved (or at least attempted) in this piece are a bit more tricky than direct lighting. It would take a long time to explain the theories and rules (ex; reflected light is more saturated than direct light, etc.) so instead I'll take this time to HIGHLY recommend Tim Hildebrandt's "Fantasy Art Techniques". I learned a crapload about color and lighting from this book and advise everyone who wants to be a better painter to get it.

Thanks for share, Mr. Jusko!
I'm re-reading now the whole Mars series of Burroughs' books (in spanish), and I found that your approach to the characters and the general atmosphere is very close to that described in the novels, in my oppinion. The only criticism I would make is the more frontal position (more human) of the green men's eyes, which is described in the book as a more lateral, and the copper color of the red men, which is not very marked in your artwork. In other respect your approach to the books is simply sublime!

Nice lighting. Have you read 'Color and Light' by James Gurney?

Hey Joe just picked this one one up today "Warlord of Mars #14" I was wondering about the change in the painting? This version you have posted here has Dejah Thoris full moon glory, but the cover on the comic has her covered? Did they (DE) ask you to change it before printing, or did you decide to make that change? There is nothing wrong either way I was just wondering about how much say you have as the artist, in the final printing?
