WARLORD OF MARS No. 1 by JoeJusko WARLORD OF MARS No. 1 by JoeJusko
Cover to the first issue of Dynamite Comics 12 issue adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs "John Carter, Warlord of Mars" series of novels. I LOVE this property and have wanted to revisit it ever since I painted the trading cards back in 1995. I'll be doing covers for all 12 issues.

Doing a posthumous Frazetta or Williamson tribute piece seemed a bit cliched, but I thought incorporating something of them into the first cover was more than appropriate.

Question. Could you resize the pic to be larger? I ask as it's kinda hard for me to see as it is.

Absolutely right. There is some sort of Frazetta vibe in it/them.

i've known of warlord of mars since i was a kid, never read the comics though. the movied ws of the hook and the fully painted art images are far better than the comic series.

Love the original Edgar Rice Burroughs books and loving the comic books (and the cover artwork of course) too. Would put them on par with the art by Frazetta, Whelan et al. Now why can't the movie posters have artwork like this?

i love edgar rice burroughs' work, and i love your interpretation and style. I just found all but one book of the John Carter series at my local library, and bought them for a dime or nickle a piece.

The ones I read were from the 60's , but I remember seeing the ones you have in the book store and wishing I could replace my collection . If I remember correctly the cover art was pretty nice too .

Enjoy your reading . I'm trying to go through the entire series on my E-book reader and while it's a great convenience a real book just seems better .Yeah , yeah , what's a Luddite like me doing with an E-book ... sigh .

I love this old school style. It reminds me of when I would walk to an old bookstore near where my father worked and I'd go to the SF/Fantasy section. The cover art all looked like this and I loved it.

Great painting. I love that there's a sort of continuity between the best artists to paint the books. The comic art inside the recent comics is pretty good, although a bit overblown. Some of the covers: anatomy based on other people's cartoons. With yours you could be there. Keep at it, Joe! Let's hope the films have some of your vision...

Absolutely brilliant, it's been a long time since I've seen an artist like yourself (espesially in traditional medea), even though you say that doing something that Frank Frazetta & Williamson have done for Edgar Rice Burroughs in the past. I have seen images with similar characters, but you have portrayed it in your own style, & to me, makes the image so unique. I can't wait to see more of your art in the mere future.

I love the work you are doing on these Joe, but I do seem to notice that the Green Men seem to be far too bulky, which is a pity. I loved your versions of them in the 1995 trading cards, and they seemed closer to ERBs descriptions. Apart from that one niggle, I think you're work is fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

Your John Carter art really inspires me. It was just the other day, I was showing my wife my first artbook I ever bought. It was your Edgar Rice Burrogh-art through his stories. From that I got into his work, and you painted into my imagation what the beautiful Queen of Mars :Dejah Thoris looked like. I can't wait to buy all 12 covers.

What's up with the big moon? Or is JC and DT on one of Mars moons and that's Mars we see on the sky? :o
