I've gone in with a bit of Raw Umber to define the form a bit. Raw Umber is a fairly neutral medium value brown that won't overpower the black tattoos but will still show through when I overlay a transparent red acrylic wash in the next step. Any black that is partially obscured during these stages can easily be re-established.

I've always wondered... Is Darth Maul Black with red tattoos, or Red with Black Tattoos?

How long do you let the raw umber dry before you lay down the red acrylic wash? Obviously not right after you've laid it down, but a couple hours? A day?

It's acrylic. It dries almost instantly. That's the main benefit (and at times, drawback) of acrylics.

I gotcha now. I've never really used acrylics. Thought about it, but have used watercolor instead. Was thinking of mixing the two mediums together, but don't know how successful that would be. I thought Stelfreeze did that, however I could be totally off. Thanks for the reply Joe! And the knowledge bestowed upon me. May have to get some acrylics now lol.
