After masking off all of the foreground elements with Windsor & Newton Art Masking Fluid I painted the background sky according to the color prelim I posted earlier. You can see the prelim taped to my board in the right hand pic. The sky is painted with Liquitex Soft Body Acrylics and a 3/4 inch soft bristle brush, applying the paint with an overlapping scumbling motion (essentially a soft drybrushing). Colors used are Prism Violet, Dioxazine Purple, Medium Magenta and Light Portrait Pink. I spattered a star field of Light Blue Violet at the top and Light Portrait Pink at the botom with a toothbrush and painted a small nebula in the upper left to check the color. I'm done with the sky for now but I'll be going back into it after the foreground is finished to punch up the star field a lot more.

Final painting is 17"x23" on heavyweight Crescent 100 cold-pressed illustration board.

Hey, I got a question, Im doing a little mermaid ''under water'' piece and am planning to use some sort of masking fluid to cover the figure so it shows up more clearly in the final. This masking fluid doesnt rub off the pencils, does it?
