The skull was rendered with a combination of traditional brushes and a small wedge shaped painting knife. A painting (palette) knife applies paint in a very spontaneous manner without over blending or rendering. With a little practice amazingly natural results can be achieved.
Wildlife artist Bob Kuhn www.kuhnsnhuk.com/ used knives almost exclusively to great effect.

Wow...This is awesome, there is so much energy in this painting, I love the abstract effect of the palette knife combined with the more tightly rendered figures.
