After compiling several different pieces of photo ref for the leopard's spot patterns (there was no actual photo ref for this pose) I drew the patern out on a piece of tracing paper I laid over the cat figure. I do this because I know I'm going to be erasing a LOT during this stage. Spot patterns are a pain in the ass as not as simple as they appear. After I'm sure I have them correct I rub graphite on the reverse of the sheet and use a hard (7H) pencil to transfer them to the final painting. I then render them with Ivory Black to set them so they don't get lost in the next few stages. This can also be done in Raw or Burnt Umber.

You know what I love seeing in this close up? The reflected blue/sweat on Tarzan's legs.

It really helps give the body form and dimension.

i sometimes use the tracing paper method to get the compositions correct when drawing something.

im sure it came in handy with the spots !

I use it if I have a lot of figures in a piece, too, and arrange them later.

do you do all your preliminary drawing on another sheet, then transfer it to this, or is all your drawing done on this page? its so clean

I do the drawing on tracing paper and transfer it over, then tighten it up on the final board. I'll post the pencil later.
