SolCannibal Featured By Owner Mar 10, 2012
Not meaning to disparage the visual impact or anything but due to something in the face and colors he looks more like a mulatto with a wig than the proto-celt/breton cimmerians are supposed to be. But then there's so much much art that Conan's look can be confusing sometimes...

I grew up with yours and John Buscema's Conan imagery. The two of you defined his look imo. Beautiful work as alway.

I knew your works for Savage sword when I was a child, and now I must say you this is the ultimate Conan, really nice.
Queen-Mum Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2010
I loved the pics of Conan in the upper corner of the mags. Being a long time (I started reading the paperbacks when I was 11, I'll be 54 next month...heh) collector of the comics, Savage Sword, Conan Saga and paperbacks from L. Sprague DeCamp and Carter, I have to say that besides Norem, Alcala, FRAZETTA WAS KING!
Boris uses models and they always looks stiff. But Joe, not bad...not bad at all..and I do believe I've seen your stuff before...

Thanks for the kind words! If you collected Savage Sword I'd assume you'd seen my work as I painted almost 50 covers for the book. :-)

LOL! I knew that Joe, I was messing with you! Great work too!

Long ago, my Grandfather introduced me to Conan (Savage Sword), and I was completely hooked. Between the art, the stories, it completely absorbed my world. But one of the main high points, were the covers. Every month, it was like Christmas ... the anticipation of what the next cover will be.
I also remember one of the most enjoyed cover artists ... you. I feel without your talent and love for this amazing character, I would not have been so enthralled. I am also an artist, but went towards the 3D character modeling route. But it has been your (and a few others) influences, that made me a better artist. To find that passion that drives us all.
Incidently, although I enjoyed the Conan the Barbarian movie, I felt Conan's portrayal was both dimwitted and clumsy. The novels and Savage Sword magazines were so completely different. Saying, "Crom', at any moment, was ... well, you get the picture.
So let me say thank you! This painting is perfect!
I have been looking for an image to use as reference to create a 3D model, and I hope you wouldn't mind if I used this (not completely) - as a reference point, that is. I also love the face. The image on the top left of the savage sword mags, had an awesome likeness, at one time. So I will stop here ... thanks again!

Wish they would have made a third movie when Arnold was still young!

The single best most photo / real life / amazing looking Conan I have ever seen PERIOD! You know I am a savage sword guy, have been since I was a kid, and yes Larkin, Norem, Boris, & and all those guys made Conan larger than life, But this painting brings him to life like NO other has. From your skin tones, to the rain, all the way down to the look in his face, Joe always make it happen! If this was a poster I would own it.
chrisdealpainter Featured By Owner Oct 6, 2009
can I ask what colors you used in the skin tones? pretty please?---chris
JoeJusko Featured By Owner Oct 11, 2009  Professional Traditional Artist
Unbleached Titanium White and Raw Umber for the basic skin tone with a bit of Hookers Green Deep for the darks. Parchment and Baltic Green for the highlights. All Liquitex.

By This Axe I Rule; that sounds like something Kull would say.

It's a book on REH, who created both characters.
twelvemotion Featured By Owner Jul 28, 2009
hehe, Conan's one of my fav characters. And nobody, NOBODY, draws him like Jusko!

Dont !@#$% with this guy!
ToshiroHoshi Featured By Owner May 26, 2009  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Love it. He looks barbarically rugged like Conan should. Some people make him look too "pretty." Awesome painting (as if I had to say it!)

In all Honesty Conan only looks good with and Axe when you draw him. other try and it looks off but you make it work.
dsantiag Featured By Owner Jan 30, 2009  Professional General Artist
Absolutely fantastic! What better subject than Conan to deliver this latest news on REH's estate -- I did not know about the legal troubles. He must have visited you in your dreams, just as he did to Howard when his stories were being written.

I'm a big fan of your artwork!
