I hate working under this kind of pressure, but it's part of the job. I'm attending the Emerald City Comicon on April 4-5, 2009. They're producing a "Monsters and Dames" art book as a showcase for the original pieces guests are doing for the charity auction. Unfortunately, none of this was really made clear to me, and I sent an old piece in thinking it was just a theme con program. When my mistake was finally made clear to me I had ONE DAY to come up with something in time to be included. This was done yesterday and from conception to finish took about 8 hours. It IS invigorating to have to fly through a piece on instinct, though, as you have no time to second guess ypurself or look for alternative solutions to problems. It's just you, a paintbrush and the clock. And LOTS of Diet Cherry Coke. 11"x14" acrylic.
Well regardless of the time crunch, I'd say it's more than passable for a book. The BG seems extremely simple though. It lets us focus on the characters more though.
Yeah, the background was the main compromise, but it works fine. If I had more time I definitely would have put more into the BG, but it really wouldn't have helped the piece to any great extent.
If you look closely it's all "smoke and mirrors". Simple BG, black silhouette of a figure, lotsa mist. The only real work is on the vampire's face and the girl. Even her dress is done with really loose, spontaneous brushstrokes reminiscent of the great 1960's paperback artists. I wish I was this spontaneous and ballsy in my everyday work.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
