Since some have asked this is a blueline image. Inkers use them when either the pencil is not available or if the penciler want the art to remain intact. It works on the same principle as a non photo blue pencil. PLEASE Google it as I can't answer the same questions 100 times and I'd like everyone to get he info. :-) This was a test piece as it was damaged (red lines when printed. The one I inked was even lighter than this.

I use them all the time. When I was inking for Marvel on their run on District X, I blue lined the entire 15 issue series. I'm so used to it that I don't like inking original pages anymore.

I'm probably gonna do that when I ink the Hellriders stuff. I can make corrections without repenciling entire pages.

I used to use bluelines but it really strains my eyes.

While in LA last year, I noticed a fellow inker was working over what I thought were original pencils, but they were just lightened greyscale printouts of the pencils so that he could print them light enough they didn't appear through the inks, but he could see everything like regular pages. I used it when I inked some Marvel stuff last month and my eyes thanked me :D I lighten pencils to 25% in photoshop and print them out.

That's another way! I prefer that actually as you're right, blulines are worse that staring at a monitor all day.

Exactly. And there's no worrying about getting a shade that's light enough that it doesn't show up later, but dark enough that your eyeballs aren't plotting a mutiny... I toss the scan on top of a white layer, then lighten the scan's layer opacity to between 15 and 25% after cleaning it. It's like working over originals penciled with a 3H, so good I don't even need my lamp most of the time.

What if the pencils aren't clean? You're inking your own so I assume they are.
